HOME-SCHOOL LIAISON PROJECT
Our Home-School Liaison Project promotes cultural awareness and appreciation
in schools, while advocating for Lao-Hmong parents and students alike. Equally
important is the bridging
language and cultural barriers while educating parents and students on the
nature of American education and their responsibilities and rights.
Our program works with at-risk students and their families to redirect their time in a
positive manner. This project also assists schools in coordinating and promoting family
involvement.
The Home-School Liaison program provides these services to many schools in the
Wausau District, post secondary institutions and parochial schools. On
occasion we also serve the surrounding school districts in neighboring
counties.
Collaboration
with school counselors, psychologists, teachers, school administrators,
parents and students proved to very effective. Educational workshops are conducted and
sessions of Hmong Language and Culture are also held.

presented information on nicotine affecting the human body. The Hmong
Women's Circle Coordinator, Youth Coordinator, Job Developer, and the Job Center
Interpreter worked together to bring these workshops to our community.
A tobacco survey was conducted resulting in a very significant number of
Southeast Asians in Wausau using tobacco. Targeting our youth population
by bringing awareness and increased education is our main focus.

EMPLOYMENT AND TRAINING PROGRAM
Job development, job placement and follow-up services is the focus of
our Job Program. Southeast Asian individuals, especially refugees, are
assisted in finding jobs in becoming more productive and self-sufficient
citizens. When a company has a job opening, the program matches the qualifications of job
seekers to the positions and determines potential applicants.
Occasionally, the Hmong Radio program is necessary to attract qualified
candidates for a specific position.

WAUSAU AREA FRESH START
Wausau's Area Fresh Start program proves to be another successful project
where numerous organizations all worked together.
The Wisconsin State Department of Commerce's support and encouragement,
WFS has two crews with Brett Petersen and Mickey Wurl-Koth
as the Site Supervisors. Both Mickey and Brett's crew
have demonstrated a cooperative work ethic to ensure that our
projects are completed as well as providing good mentoring to the Americorp members.
WFS assists individuals to complete their GED's (General Educational
Diploma). Jill Literski, our classroom instructor, is
instrumental in our member's academic success. Approximately 70% of our
members didn't complete High School, however with members dedicating up to two
hours per day in the classroom, and with Jill's helpfulness has earned WFS's
success with the pledging of the Wausau School District financial support in the
future.
