WAHMA's Elderly Program is coordinated by the Hmong Association but is a collaborate with many other local agencies regarding services and resources to help the older population in Marathon County.
Project staff have helped older Hmong refugees who are in need of citizenship assistance. The elderly attend a meeting on Thursday's and enjoy a variety of activities from basket weaving to gift cards, walking exercises, ball tossing, drawing practice and knitting projects. During the summer time we have also set up a picnic gathering for them to take part in.
In addition to activities, we also try to teach the elderly some English at the beginning of every meeting or educate the elderly population through the Hmong Radio because many elders do not read and write.
We also have someone from the American Red Cross to do blood check for diabetes and high blood pressures which has been good for them to keep a check on their health and let them know if a trip to the doctor may be needed.
